I was really excited to read that the Charity Finance Group (CFG) have launched a toolkit for charities around improving record management. Yes it might sound boring but it is a subject that is close to my heart having worked in charities over the past few years in finance and governance.

It always surprises me how people focus specifically on the finance records of an organisation but don’t pay much attention to other types of records. “But they’re just bits of paper with no real value” I hear you say but you’d be wrong. Good record keeping is an integral part of any organisation but particularly in charities where you are open to scrutiny from the Charity Commission, current and potential funders and ultimately the public.

Records can be anything from board minutes to publicity material, paper or digital and each of them are valuable in there own way.

But what do you do when you don’t know where to start? Having read through CFG’s guide I would say that this is good place to start as it talks you through the types of records you may have any why they are important. It also has a very handy self assessment tool to enable you to see where you are now and develop an action plan to address any areas for improvement. This action plan to RAG rated (red, amber, green) to enable you to prioritise and not feel overwhelmed.

So what are you waiting for?

Happy record hunting!
